Introduction
Welcome to Trailer Loading the Horseplay Way a Horseplay Mini Course! We have found that trailer loading is a common problem in the equine community and one that can be extremely frustrating especially when we are in a hurry or feeling the pressure of time constraints to get our horses loaded to head to an event! We decided that compiling this mini course would be a great tool for our Horseplayers out there to add to their toolkit (plus it incorporates one of our favourite tricks - pedestal work!) When loading in a trailer we put our horses training under a magnifying glass. If your horse has holes in his ground training, it is likely these issues will come to light when we are taking him out of his comfort zone and introducing a trailer. There are many reasons a horse may not feel comfortable getting into a trailer and we will discuss those reasons and how to overcome them within this course. Although it may seem like a simple exercise to load your horse, there is a reason so many people struggle with loading there horses! When we ask a horse to load, we are asking them to: enter a confined space (something a prey animal instinctively will try to avoid), step up on to an object that shifts and moves underneath them (which is unnerving to many horses), confront strange noises and trust us enough to go against their natural instincts and proceed into the trailer. To address these natural hesitations your horse may have, we will break trailer loading down into simple steps to ensure that are easy to understand and present to your horse without overwhelming them. Our goal is to make your trailering loading experience successful and stress-free for both you and for your horse!
